John says God is love and explains that God loved us and sent his Son so that we might live through him. The Father’s sending of the Son and God’s abiding with those who confess the Son give the love concrete relational expression. No one has seen God, yet this passage speaks of knowing him and remaining in him; love is not presented merely as an abstract substitute for an acting God.
