God commands Israel to keep his life-giving statutes, but Israel rejects them and follows idols. Verses 25–26 attribute the giving of not-good statutes and pollution through their gifts to God himself, with the stated purpose of making them desolate. Verse 31 calls their burning of sons pollution with idols; verses 39–40 contrast that rejected service with offerings God accepts. The contrast concerns punitive purpose and approved conduct; it does not reduce God’s active giving to mere permission or specify its exact mechanism.
