Paul distinguishes concession from command, the Lord’s command concerning marriage from his own direction to mixed marriages, and different gifts. His own direction still tells believers what to do and invokes God’s call to peace; verse 17 gives a rule for all the assemblies. The exact reach of “this” in verse 6 is not needed here. “I—not the Lord—say” distinguishes the attribution of that instruction; the passage does not call it false or say that the Spirit is absent. It does not expressly define this contrast as only the absence of a recorded saying from Jesus’s earthly ministry.
