John says the Word was with God and was God, and that nothing that has been made was made without him. He then describes the Word becoming flesh, the Son’s relation to the Father, and grace and truth through Jesus Christ. These descriptions place the Word beyond the class of things made while preserving distinction from the Father. Verse 18 here reads Son; the argument does not depend on a different reading of that verse.
