Paul contrasts Timothy’s following his teaching with deceiving people, then tells Timothy to continue in what he learned. He commends the sacred writings known from infancy as able to make Timothy wise for salvation through faith in Christ, and describes Scripture’s usefulness for instruction and good works. No writing or class of sacred writings is designated uninspired in this paragraph. The alternative rendering in the verse 16 footnote, “Every writing inspired by God is,” remains material: the observation concerns what the paragraph identifies, not whether grammar excludes every restrictive reading or supplies a later canon list.
